What to bring when you are froggin

Hey yo, if you are a first time gone froggin or you just making sure you have what you need, you might wanna check out this list.

IMG_0487 The first thing you should bring is a positive attitude because sometimes you don’t find what you are looking for and no one wants to be with a grumpy goose. Next you wanna bring a buddy along. I’m a firm believer in the buddy system. If you fall in the woods and break your leg, you are gonna be shit up a creek. I’d also bring a cell phone so you can call 911 in case of emergency.  Also if your phone has a camera that is a bonus because you want to have something to take pictures of the frogs. You can also use your camera to upload observations to herpmapper and or inaturalist.  You want to bring a bag along to fill with some of the stuff I’m gonna say. Make sure to bring a water bottle filled with water so you don’t get dehydrated or bring a filter to clean stream water. Snacks are also good to bring, such as granola bars. You may want to bring some type of net if you aren’t quick enough with your hands or you want to catch some tadpoles. Bringing a notebook and a pen or pencil to take notes is also recommended. I know people who bring pepper spray and or knives in case of stranger danger. If it’s night and you hate mosquitoes, you can bring one of those head mosquito nets. You should also bring a flashlight or a headlight if it’s nighttime. That’s all I can think of right now, if you think of anything, just comment on the article.

How to help frogs

IMG_0277

If you are looking to help save frogs from extinction, here are a few ways.

  • Try to reduce your footprint on the earth. Remember reduce, reuse, and recycle in that order.
  • Donate to amphibian and animal conservation groups, I share some here often.
  • Make your backyard frog friendly, I’ll probably make a post on this sometime
  • Don’t eat frogs
  • If you buy a pet frog, make sure it’s captive breed
  • Do not pollute, clean up after yourself

Do you have any ways?

Roxanne you don’t have to put on the red light but you better check out this frog named after Sting. Dendropsophus stingi  from Colombia is named after Sting and his conservation efforts. Sadly most people call it the Kaplan’s Garagoa treefrog instead of the Sting Frog.

This frog, Dendropsophus ozzyi, is named after Ozzy Osbourne, lead singer of Black Sabbath. They named it after him because the frog makes high pitch bat like calls and we all know what Ozzy did to a bat.

What to wear while you’re froggin

IMG_1049
Me looking happy

If you are new to froggin, you might be wondering what to wear while you go froggin. I’ll go over my suggestions.

Footwear

What kind of footwear you wear depends on the habitat you are going to be froggin in. Hiking shoes are best for dry, rocky terrain, but for wetter terrain, you want to go with swamp boots / rubber boots or waders.

Wear socks while froggin and pack an extra pair in case you get wet.

Pants

I would advise you to wear long pants when froggin, even if it’s hot outside. Long pants protect you better from ticks and poison ivy.  Ticks are the most dangerous thing when froggin.

Shirt

Any shirt can be worn but a long sleeve shirt is better because it protects you from ticks and mosquitoes.

Headgear

Definitely wear a hat because it stops flies from crawling in your hair and occasionally stops branches from hitting you in the face. Baseball cap style is preferred.  Headlamps are good for froggin at night. It allows you to use both your hands freely.

Bug Spray can be used but keep it away from your hands. You don’t want to get the spray on the frogs you catch.

Frog’s Diet

Do you know what frogs eat for food? Frogs are carnivores so they eat meat but there are a lot of different items that they eat. Frogs only like to eat live animals unless you trick them into eating a dead one. Frogs generally eat anything they can fit into their mouth. Frogs will even eat other frogs so be careful housing frogs together.

frog eat frog

Frogs such as the Mexican Burrowing Frog, eat mainly termites and ants they find underground. Their mouth is narrow to help them eat.

Most frogs stick to the usual prey item – insects and worms. Grasshoppers, crickets, moths, spiders, and flies are the most common items.

Larger frogs are able to eat small snakes, mice, fish, and even small birds.

What’s the Difference: Frogs vs Toads

What is the difference between frogs vs toads? It is a question asked since the beginning of time itself. The short answer is there are no differences. Frog and toad are just words we humans use to categorize organisms.  Frogs can refer to any species in the order Anura (which include both frogs and toads), so all toads are technically frogs.

So what is a toad? Toads usually refer to members of the family Bufonidae – the True Toad family. These toads generally have dry, warty skin and short legs. They usually suck at jumping compared to a frog.

Frogs vs Toads
Standard Toad

There are other families that are considered toads such as the family Scaphiopodidae – North American Spadefoot Toad Family. So now, are toads just members of select families? Nope. There are random species that are named toad instead of frog. The Suriname Toad is referred to as a toad but it’s from the family Pipidae and generally spends its life in the water. So yeah, frogs and toads are annoying.
