Common Name: Splashback Poison Dart Frog
Scientific Name: Adelphobates galactonotus
Family: Dendrobatidae – Poison Dart Frog family
Location: Brazil
Size: (30.5 – 42 mm)
The Splashback Poison Dart Frog lives in the leaf litter of the tropical lowland forests of Brazil. The frog gathers in small groups around Brazil Nut Trees. They use the fallen, broken open nuts to lay their eggs in. Once the eggs hatch, the male frog carries the eggs 2 by 2 to a bigger water body.
The Splashback Poison Dart Frog is named for its black body with orange or red coloration “splashed” on its back. However, they come in a variety of color variations. Some variations can be solid colors while others have black markings on a bright colored skin. The Splashback Poison Dart Frog can be found in the pet trade. Before getting a pet frog, read my article “Preparing for a Pet Frog / Toad“.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assess the Splashback Poison Dart Frog as Least Concern for Extinction. The frog has a good size range and is presumed to be numerous throughout it.
