Common Name: Bleeding Toad, Fire Toad, Indonesian Tree Toad
Scientific Name: Leptophryne cruentata
Family: Bufonidae – True Toad family
Location: Indonesia – West Java
Size: 0.78 – 1.57 inches (20 – 40 mm)

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assesses the Bleeding Toad as Critically Endangered with Extinction. The number of mature individuals left in the wild is estimated fewer than 250. The species used to be common before the 1980s but then almost disappeared entirely. Initially, researchers believed the decline to be due to a volcanic eruption nearby but now they believe it could have been chytrid fungus, a deadly frog disease.
