Common Name: Ruby Poison Frog
Scientific Name: Ameerega parvula
Family: Dendrobatidae – Poison Dart Frog family
Locations: Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru
Size: 0.6 – 1.0 inches (17.5 – 24.0 mm)
The Ruby Poison Frog lives in the tropical and subtropical rain forests. Their bright colors warn predators that they are poisonous. This is called aposematic coloration. They are able to be active during the day (diurnal) due to predators fearing them.
After mating, the female lays her eggs in the leaf litter. Once the eggs hatch, the males carry the tadpoles on their backs to streams where they will finish off their metamorphosis.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List classifies the Ruby Poison Frog as Least Concern for Extinction. The species has a wide range and is thought to be common throughout it.
