Maria Elena’s Glass Frog (Chimerella mariaelenae)

Common Name: Maria Elena’s Glass Frog
Scientific Name: Chimerella mariaelenae
Family: Centrolenidae – Glass Frog family
Location: Ecuador and Peru
Size: 0.8 inches (20.3 mm)

The Maria Elena’s Glass Frog is a nocturnal species of frog found high in the canopy of the low montane cloud forests near streams. Unfortunately, it is not a lot is known about the species. The eggs of the frog have been found on the underside of leaves in November. The females provide some care for the offspring. Eggs hatch into tadpoles.

The frog is named after one of the mom’s of the researcher, Diego F. Cisneros-Heredia, who described it. How sweet.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assesses the frog as Least Concern for Extinction. The frog has a wide range and presumed large population. Currently, the IUCN Red List lists no threats to the Maria Elena’s Glass Frog.
