Frogs in Victoria, Australia

Victoria is home to over 35 species of different species of frogs in two different families.

Hylidae – Tree Frog family in Victoria

Victoria, Australia, hosts a variety of tree frog species, known for their vibrant colors and remarkable climbing abilities. Tree Frogs in Victoria are nocturnal, often heard rather than seen, with males emitting distinctive calls to attract mates during the breeding season.

Green and Golden Bell Frog (Litoria aurea)

The Green and Golden Bell Frog is a large, green tree frog with gold patches on its body. The frog can turn brown when cold or inactive. The groin and thighs are blue.

Booroolong Frog (Litoria booroolongensis)
Conservation status is Endangered

The Booroolong Frog is a medium sized frog, varying in color grey to brown with dark or light brown spots or patches. Front fingers are slightly webbed while the back ones are fully webbed.

Blue Mountains Tree Frog (Litoria citropa)

The Blue Mountains Tree Frog is a large tree frog that is light or dark brown in color with green sides. There is also a brown stripe that goes from the tip of the nose and down the side. The armpits and insides of the groins are red in color. They also have a brown tympanum.

Southern Brown Tree Frog (Litoria ewingi)

The Southern Brown Tree Frog is a medium sized, arboreal tree frog that is brown or cream in color. There is a stripe that goes from the snout, through the eye, and down to the arm. The backs of their thighs are reddish-orange in color. The iris of the eye is gold.

Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog (Litoria fallax)

The Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog lives up to its name, only reaching 2.5 cm long. The frog is green in color with a white stripe from under its eye to its arm.

Jervis Bay Tree Frog (Litoria jervisiensis)

The Jervis Bay Tree Frog is a medium sized, brown or gray frog with a thick dark brown stripe down its back. There is a black stripe from the tip of the nose down to its side and a white stripe underneath it. The armpits are yellow and the thighs and groin are red.

Lesueur’s Tree Frog / Strony Creek Frog (Litoria lesueuri)

The Stony Creek Frog is a medium sized frog with a brown or yellow body. There can be speckles and mottling on their body. There is a black stripe from their eye down to their side. Their iris is gold on top and brown on the bottom. Their groins and thighs are black with pale blue spots.

The Littlejohn’s Tree Frog is a large, gray or brown tree frog with red coloring in their armpits and groins.

Plains Tree Frog (Litoria paraewingi)

A small to medium sized tree frog, ranging in color cream to brown. There is a stripe from its snout down its side. There is another white stripe under the eye. Additionally, there is a thick stripe running straight down its back.

Peron’s Tree Frog (Litoria peroni)

The Peron’s Tree Frog is a large, grey to light brown colored frog. The thighs are bright yellow in color with black botches.

Screaming Tree Frog (Litoria quiritatus)

The Screaming Tree Frog is a medium brown or gray color frog with a thick brown stripe down its back. The males turn a yellow color during the breeding season.

Growling Grass Frog  / Southern Bell Frog / Warty Swamp Frog (Litoria raniformis)

The Growling Grass Frog is a large sized frog that is green with bronze / gold blotches. It has a cream colored stripe that goes from behind its eye down its side.

Spotted Tree Frog (Litoria spenceri)

The Spotted Tree Frog is a medium sized tree frog ranging in brown or green in color that sometimes has brown or green spotting over its body. There is a brown stripe from the tip of the snout down its side. The back of the thighs are yellow or orange in color.

Whistling Tree Frog / Verreaux’s Tree Frog (Litoria verreauxi)

The Whistling Tree Frog is a medium sized, brown or green frog. They have a stripe that goes from the tip of their nose and down their side. They have two more stripes that go from their eye and down their back. The thighs are orange and the groin is yellow with black spots.

Southern Stream Frog (Ranoidea nudidigita)

The Southern Stream Frog is a medium sized green frog with a gold or silver stripe from the tip of its nose, through its eye, and down its side. The armpits and groins are dark purple / red in color.

Myobatrachidae – Australian Ground Frogs in Victoria

The Australian Ground Frogs found in Victoria are terrestrial or fossorial in nature. They vary in sizes from 2 centimeters to over 10 centimeters.

Eastern Sign-bearing Froglet (Crinia parinsignifera)

The Eastern Sign-bearing Froglet is a small frog ranging in color from grey, brown, and copper. They don’t have any patches or lines down their back.

Eastern Common Froglet (Crinia signifera)

The Eastern Common Froglet is a small frog, ranging in color from brown, gray, cream, reddish-brown, or beige. The belly is grey with white and black speckles.

Sloane’s Froglett (Crinia sloanei)

The Sloane’s Froglett is a small, gray or green frog with dark patches over its body. There are no distinct stripes on its back or head.

Southern Smooth Froglett (Geocrinia laevis)

The Southern Smooth Froglet is a small frog with a gray to brown coloration with a stripe from its nose to behind its eye.

Victorian Smooth Froglet (Geocrinia victoriana)

The Victiorian Smooth Froglet is a small, gray or brown frog that sometimes has yellow, white, or orange patches on its body. The groin and thighs sometimes have pink or yellow patches. There can be a stripe through the eye and down its side.

Otway Smooth Frog (Geocrinia sparsiflora)

The Otway Smooth Frog is a small frog ranging in color from red, yellow, or brown with yellow or white blotches on their back. The belly varies in color as well from blue gray to fleshy pink.

Giant Burrowing Frog (Heleioporus australiacus)

The Giant Burrowing Frog is a massive frog species often brown, gray, or black in color with yellow spots on its sides. The frog’s iris is silver or gray in color and they have vertical pupils.

Eastern Banjo Frog / Pobblebonk (Limnodynastes dumerili)

The Eastern Banjo Frog is a large sized frog that is brown or gray in color with orange or yellow molting on sides. There is a white or yellow stripe from its eye to its shoulder. The pupil is horizontal.

Barking Marsh Frog / Long-Thumbed Frog (Limnodynastes fletcheri)

The Barking Marsh Frog is a medium, beige or gray-brown frog with dark spots on its body. It does not have a stripe down its back.

Giant Banjo Frog (Limnodynastes interioris)

The Giant Banjo Frog is a large, brown color frog with a black stripe from its nose down its side. They also have an orange stripe under the black stripe. The eye is horizontal and the pupil is gold.

Striped Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes peroni)

The Striped Marsh Frog is a large, brown frog with dark stripes down their back with a white or red stripe down their center of their back.

Spotted Grass Frog / Spotted Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis)

The Spotted Grass Frog is a medium sized frog that either gray or green in color with darker colored blotches on their body. A stripe can be found down the middle of their back sometimes. Males develop a yellow throat during breeding season. It is found on the eastern half of the territory.

Northern Stuttering Frog (Mixophyes balbus)

The Northern Stuttering Frog is a large, brown or gray frog with a stripe from the tip of its nose down its side. and a black triangle on its nose. The pupil is vertical and the iris is brown.

The Malle Spadefoot Toad is a large, brown or gray frog with a stripe down the middle of the back. The pupil’s are vertical.

Sudell’s Frog / Common Spadefoot Toad (Neobatrachus sudellae)

The Common Spadefoot Toad is a medium, brown or gray frog with a stripe down the middle of the back. The pupil’s are vertical.

Red-groined Froglet (Paracrinia haswelli)

The Red-groined Froglet is a small to medium sized frog that is brown or red in color with a black stripe from its nose down to its arm. The belly is white with brown marbling.

Bibron’s Toadlet (Pseudophryne bibroni)

The Bibron’s Toadlet is a small toadlet dark blue or blue gray in color with red or orange patches on their arms. They sometimes have a orange or yellow stripe down their back.

Dendy’s Toadlet (Pseudophryne dendyi)

The Dendy’s Toadlet is a small toadlet that is black or dark gray in color. They often have a yellow spot on their head, back, or arms. Their bellies are marbled.

Southern Toadlet (Pseudophryne semimarmorata)

The Southern Toadlet is a small, dark brown, black or olive color toadlet with bumpy skins. The underside of their arms and legs is orange in color.

Smooth Toadlet (Uperoleia laevigata)

The Smooth Toadlet is a small, brown frog with dark markings on its body. They have a light colored triangle on their head and a dark stripe between their eyes. The tops of their arms are yellow or light brown in color while the their groins and thighs are red. Their bellies are white with white spots on them.

Martin’s Toadlet (Uperoleia martini)

The Martin’s Toadlet is a small to medium sized frog that is gray or black in color with a brown belly with gray / blue spots. The top of the shoulders are yellow or orange in color as well as their inside thighs and groin. They have a very large parotid gland behind their eye.

Wrinkled toadlet (Uperoleia rugosa)

The Wrinklet Toadlet is a small, gray or brown toadlet with dark patches on its body. The undersurface of the arms and legs are pale pink in color. They have a very large parotid gland behind their eye.

Tyler’s Toadlet (Uperoleia tyleri)

The Tyler’s Toadlet is one of the larger toadlets, reaching up to 3.5 cm long. They are gray or brown in color with yellow markings on the shoulder. The belly is dark brown. They have a very large parotid gland behind their eye.
