Genus: 1 – Amphiuma
Species: 3 – Two toed Amphiuma (Amphiuma means), One toed Amphiuma (Amphiuma pholeter), and Three toad Amphiuma (Amphiuma tridactylum)
Amphiumas are large eel-like salamanders. They still have all four legs but they are heavily reduced. Amphiumas do not have gills which can help tell them apart from Sirens and Mudpuppies / Waterdogs. They also don’t have eye lids and tongues. They are found in Southeaster United States which is where you can also find Sirens. Separating the individual species apart is easy because they all have different number of toes, but they can be tiny and hard to count.
