Answer to Cane Toad or No

The answer was…. 1! #2 was an American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus) and #3 was a Asian Common Toad (Duttaphrynus melanostictus). Ok I was kinda a jerk for picking random toads from a variety of places instead of one area and most of the pics weren’t great at highlighting the differences between the species. Next time, I’ll be better.

Best way to tell these 2 aren’t Cane Toads is where the parotoid gland (the poison gland) is and its shape. Both of the toad’s parotoid gland is directly behind their eye. The Cane Toad’s parotoid gland is more on their shoulder. The angle I took the pic of the Cane Toad at is extremely bad at showing the gland especially since its half way in the water. There isn’t a cranial crest in the center of their head. There are ridges next to the eye but they aren’t the cranial crest.

  1. Ah, dang, I was mostly looking at the way they were sitting. I thought Cane Toads sat with their chests a little higher, which is why I picked the more raised looking one. The parotoid gland also looked more prominently displayed on the one I chose, which made me feel more confident in it being the cane toad. Thanks for the insight! 🙂
