The goal of Herper of the Week is to highlight people from all walks of life who work with reptiles and amphibians and show their work to others.  This week’s Herper of the Week is Dr. Tyrone Hayes, professor of Integrative Biology at University of California – Berkeley. His research focuses on the role of steroid hormones in amphibian development.

Dr. Tyrone Hayes is known for his research on the herbicide altrazine and it’s effect on male frogs. From his research, he found that altrazine is a endocrine disruptor that demasculinizes and feminizes male frogs. His results were / are controversial. He has been an activist for banning the chemical while the EPA still won’t ban it.
